MI: State to pay $80M to settle sex abuse cases… where it’s own guards are the perpetrators

The state of Michigan has more “sex offense” issues to deal with and it’s not because of sex offenders on their registry, it’s because of their own prison guards.

In 2009, the state settled a 1996 case, Neal v. Michigan Department of Corrections, in which female prisoners alleged a pattern of sexual misconduct and harassment by male officers for $100,000,000.

Today, state officials announced that Michigan will pay $80 million to settle a lawsuit with former juvenile offenders who claimed they were sexually abused in Michigan prisons.

The state is spending so much time and resources digging their heels in order to violate the constitutional rights of people who may have committed old sex offenses, that they can’t monitor their own employees to prevent them from committing new ones.

The old saying “Do as I say, not as a I do”.

How many of the officers got fired? Got arrested? Got transferred or demoted for this behavior ?
How many kept their jobs with just a write up or denied it and were believed?
How many were put on the sex offender or predator registry?

Excellent, but $80,000,000 is not enough for 1300 people. $61k for being sexual abused in confinement as a juvenile?

Why am I not surprised? The only thing that is surprising, is that it wasn’t Florida, because we all know this occurs here as well.

Notice the timeline of the case…”in 2009, the state settled a 1996 case” of sexual abuse by a prison guard. That’s an awful long time to wait for a settlement. And I bet the state fought tooth and nail to avoid an settlement just the way they do when seeking a prosecution. This shows the double speak of lawyers for the state.

Wait…… you mean it’s NOT people on the MI Registry who are committing all the sexual offenses in the State?? And the Registry DIDN’T prevent these offenses from occurring??

(Wow, who knew!? Besides all of us stuck on Registries, of course!!)

It never ceases to amaze me at the number of people in positions of authority that are committing sex offenses. Over the past several weeks there has been over 10 cases in my small rural area where teachers, teachers aids, and coaches from different local school districts have been arrested for institutional sexual assault, along with other offenses. The government thinks that they have things all under control and everyone is safe because of the sex offense registry??? Over the past several years, of all the many people arrested for various sex crimes in my area: NONE have been registered sex offenders! That alone speaks volumes to me that the registry does not work!! Also, the male offenders in these cases had bail set at $250,000.00 or more. The female offenders for basically the same offenses had bail set at $30 to $50,000.00. Something is really wrong with the system!

I have never been able to understand why there are female guards in male prisons and male guards in female prisons. It is difficult…impossible… to be modest 24 hours a day, and that is asking for trouble. A lot of the unsavory situations our nation gets itself into is self inflicted. I would not want to be in command of a warship in today’s Navy!

I have no problem with a female working in any position but I think being a female guard in a male prison should be an exception. Same for male guards working in women’s prisons.
I relate this to having a man be in charge of a girl scout or brownie troop. It is a set up for disaster.
Guess I should not have gone there because now girls are allowed into the boy scout but boys cannot be in the girl scouts.
I do know when I was on the force, there was a female cop who pretty butch and no one wanted here as a partner. I volunteered to be her partner and we cleared more cases together than 10 other detective units. And she dropped guys twice my size that I wouldn’t have wanted to tangle with.
So in closing, there cannot be a blanket rule on sexes but on a discretionary basis.
Prisons are full of some bad people and not all of them are the inmates.

The Boy Scouts started to loosen up on their standards and now they are in bankruptcy. The United Methodist Church is in the process of self-destruction. I believe that most humans want some form of discipline in their lives and when the standards/discipline starts to go away either the people move on or anarchy sets in. It breaks my heart to see the military or law enforcement lower their standards to appease a certain group or to meet a goal that is artificially set. When that happens we lose sight of the initial purpose of the organization to begin with…friends become enemies.

I was a jail deputy and had an situation with a female (adult) inmate that wss just kidsing on neck and breast no intercourse. I now have a felony sex offense for unlawful sexual relations LEO. It’s not easy being in that environment getting to know those inmates especially when your home life isn’t the best, they really put people especially men in a position to fail

I spent 10 years in prison and boy did I see some things the guards were doing with the inmates. Sometimes the guards did not care if you saw them and would bring you canteen items if you did, just to keep you quiet. I have one guard that would bring me 2 boiled eggs every morning that he worked. Sex will always be in prisons somehow someway!!!
