Member Submission: Scams against persons required to register as sex offenders continue.

We regularly like to post reminders of the scams out there that continue to target persons on the registry. If you are a regular reader of our forum, you already know this, but if we can prevent one person from being scammed out of thousands of dollars, it’s worth the redundancy.

So, I guess it is that time of year again. My husband received a call from “Sheriff Porter” from the SLC “Sheriff’s” Office, who requested a call back. I knew this was a scam, but called back from my cell phone, made up a fictitious name, and was told I had missed a “FEDERAL” registration notice and I received a “Citation”. I was then told the remedy was a “payment”. My husband took the phone and then very “politely” told the nice sheriff that we knew he was a scam artist and “encouraged” him not to call us again. I make light of it, but it was very upsetting. It is literally the SAME person who called us this time last year. My guess is that they call during a person’s registration month in order for it to seem as if the registration error is legitimate. We are filing a police report. Apparently, not even Covid slows down the scammers. For reference, he said his name was Sheriff Travis Porter from the SLC Sheriff’s Department, Offenders Division. His number is 772-408-9496. When you call, there is a voice message that states the same and asks for your information. It’s despicable.

Is there any indication that when we report these scams to the police that they actually take the report seriously?Or do they take the report and trash it before you have walked out the door?

I called the number and a gentleman answered with Travis Porter Investigation. I asked him if he was the one running the scam against sex offender registrants. He said I have no idea what you are talking about!!
I live in Tennessee and If I was able to contact this person it seems like the local police could contact him very easy. I you are making a report to your law enforcement and they do not follow up I would contact every news organization in Florida. KEEP YOUR PHONE RECORDS AND MAKE A COMPLAINT IN WRITING

Someone tried this on me late last year. They called and told me I had missed some kind of new federal registration that had just gone into effect and that there was now a warren out for me. I had just woken up and the guy was really good at selling it, so I actually started to believe it at first.

My BS alarm went off when he said that in order to pay my bond, I had to go to some shady Bitcoin kiosk.

I talked to the registration officer and he assured me that they’d NEVER call you over a matter like this, but would instead show up in person. I made a detailed report with the sheriff’s office, with the phone number they called from, date/time and every detail I could remember but never heard back from them. Although I did get a call from an out of state police officer a few months later that wanted to talk about it, but they never returned my voicemail.
