It’s #givingtuesday! Please consider FAC in your generosity.

Today is “Giving Tuesday”, the day recognized as a “global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world”. If you were planning on participating in Giving Tuesday, we humbly ask that you consider the Florida Action Committee in your generosity.

Our organization relies entirely on the donations and voluntary dues contributed by our members. Every accomplishment we’ve made over the past decade (plus) has been made possible by your financial contributions and volunteer efforts and the contributions and efforts of others, like you, who are fighting to put an end to injustice.

This past year we got some positive but unexpected news. We planned and budgeted to help fund the expenses for one “Ex Post Facto Plus” challenge, but with success in the Northern District of Florida (the case survived a motion to dismiss) and success in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, there are now two (2) active cases going forward that we need to sustain.

If you look at the thermometer on our website, you will see that we are more than three thousand dollars short of our 2022 goal (and that doesn’t consider our 2022 goal only accounted for one case). We currently need to raise an additional $7400 in expert witness costs that are due (or will become due in the coming weeks) and depositions start in the Northern District case this week. Transcripts alone will cost several thousands. We need your help!

Additionally, through our education committee we would like to test billboards. Yes, large billboards along the side of highways that will educate thousands of motorists and bring awareness to our cause. This plan will also require a significant investment, but we feel it will yield a significant return. Our plan will be announced in the coming days so that we can launch right at the beginning of 2023, but will be largely dependent on the financial resources we are able to raise.

This #givingtuesday we are asking you to please help. We MUST raise funds for the legal challenges and we would like to raise money to launch billboards. We would love to do both, but our ability is dependent on your contributions.

To help, visit https://floridaactioncommittee.org/donations/ and select “FAC Ex Post Facto Sustainer 2022” for the two active cases or “FAC Billboards” for the billboards (or any other area of focus you feel is important).

I’m sure ACSOL can use donations as well. We should all support each other.

Regarding the scam calls- we got one today in Jacksonville. A man claiming to be jso said husband had missed an appointment and it was a big problem. Husband responded, “no I didn’t “. The man tried to insist but husband cut him short and said “Look, an officer was just here yesterday afternoon at 520-when was this appointment?” The asshat hung up. I’m not one for conspiracies, but I honestly do think maybe some level of law enforcement is involved in some of these – maybe not this one since if it was a local LEO a recent visit should have been in the records. (Our actual visit was a couple weeks ago but after getting the bejesus scared out of us the first time, we’re on to their tricksy ways . Hang in there people!

I agree with you, Rachel d. Here in Michigan, our phone numbers are not published online, yet I have received many scam calls like that, and I know several others who have received scam calls as well. If it’s not the police, who already have access to our phone numbers, then who is it?

Is it impossible that they’re in out it? No. Is it likely? Also a no. Are they intentionally neglecting to inform ex-offenders of scams going around? Some very much are. We know some law enforcement buy into the myths. I mean, if it was your bread and butter to catch “bad guys”, you’d convince yourself they exist, too. Unless you want to hate your job and have to find a new one, most people do what they have to do to get by. It’s the system’s fault, they put a profit on prisons and over-reaching law enforcement. It’s a political change that may never happen in our lifetimes.

Here’s the real deal. Based on your NAME, someone can usually find a valid phone number. There are several sites that are pretty good at harvesting and providing this data. The good news is that you can actually request that they remove your phone number. I have yet to deal with a scam caller, and I attribute it to this simple preventative measure.

You can also add call blockers to your smart phone. I highly recommend this. There is one that has community-based reporting so that when you get one of these scam calls, you can actually submit your report and warn others who also use the app. It’s called “Should I Answer”.

Nobody on this site should be falling for scam calls, even if you receive one. FAC tries to get anti-scam posters/flyers out to registration offices, and the like. But ultimately, not all of them are going to post it or let people know that scams are happening. This means many are and will continue to fall victim to the scam. Another one of those perpetual “non-punishment” punishments 😏
