Happy Veteran's Day from Florida Action Committee!

Novelist Sidney Sheldon once said, “my heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place.” On this day, I think it is important to recognize all those who stand on the front lines to make our world better.

Whether it’s members of the armed forces, our police and fire rescue or those among us fighting the “war on sex offenders”, there are true heroes out there who are willing to stand up and protect our country and our citizens – including registered citizens.

A couple of months ago, Retired Navy Captain Bob Munsey submitted an article to the Orlando Sentinel on sex offender issues, in which he wrote, “I am not one to “live in the shadows.” I am an ex-sex offender”.

The courage Capt. Munsey displayed in putting his own name out there and risking his personal safety, is one of the bravest things I’ve seen. Today, we need to commemorate him. Not just for his three decades of service to the armed forces, but his continuing service to us in standing on the front lines of the war on sex offenders. He is truly a hero!

Last weekend I received a call from one of our members, Jason, who is an FAC county coordinator and one of the litigants in the Internet Identifier Challenge. Recently, the judge in that case ruled that the plaintiffs would not be able to proceed anonymously. That means that instead of being able to be referred to as “John Doe”, Jason will have to use his real name, putting himself out there. He told me that he’s not going to bow out, but will stay in the fight, proudly putting himself on the “front lines” to protect all of our constitutional rights. He is truly a hero!

This Veteran’s Day, the Florida Action Committee acknowledges and thanks the many of our members who have served in the military. May we all commemorate your service through our own actions in standing up, speaking out and bravely fighting back to make our country a better place!

I salute Bob and Jason for their courage and Bob for his service. As is Bob, I am also a military retiree. But with the exception of a very few, my service means nothing now because I am a registered citizen. I am detained and vilified every time I go on a military base to receive medical care. I haven’t been back since my last harrowing experience when I was forced to wait over an hour before being allowed to go to the emergency room! Even then I wasn’t allowed to drive my car on base, an ambulance was sent to get me. I wish I could sue the bastards.
