Florida voters with felony convictions ask justices to intervene in voting-rights dispute
With the deadline to register to vote in Florida’s August primary election 12 days away, a group of Florida voters and civil rights groups today asked the Supreme Court to reinstate a ruling by a federal trial court that struck down a state law that requires Florida residents who have been convicted of a felony to pay all court fees and costs before voting. An order by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit that put the trial court’s ruling on hold, the voters argue, “creates chaos and confusion about who can and cannot vote, where a wrong guess creates the risk of criminal prosecution.” The potential impact of the Supreme Court’s ruling is immense, the voters add, for three-quarters of a million Floridians who may now be uncertain about their eligibility to vote as a result of the 11th Circuit’s order.
Just go to the poling place early all together. Make sure members of the press know what you are doing. Make sure you bring picket signs for people to have to cross at poling places and bring friends with cameras. Only leave when law enforcement crosses the picket line to ask you to leave. Make sure a new person comes in when you are asked to leave. Voting in a federal election is a preserved right. Let’s take a looksee shall we?
Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation
One in five black men go to prison where they have a previous condition of servitude and are denied their right to vote. Let’s not let this one slip!
Where does that leave RSO persons who do NOT owe any fees. I think this may be a trick to arrest rso,a that believe that they can vote without penalty of atrest.
I don’t think RSOs have anything to do on this petition. The Constitution still precludes RSOs from voting.
What actual right does a state have to block certain people from voting based on a part conviction? A felony is not treason. With people catching felony charges and convictions every day for things they may not have even known would be a felony, neither the republicans or democrats can complain about losing any elections. They can thank themselves for not allowing people to vote.
PAST* conviction. Damn auto spell.
ALL American citizens have the right to vote.
There should be NO exceptions – ZERO!
This is nothing more than further PUNISHMENT and NO different than excluding any other minority the opportunity for their voice to be heard!
This is shameful and UN-American!
The way I see it, it would be a great and interesting lawsuit (preferably class action) to say that if we can’t vote- don’t tax us. The FL and US government wouldn’t like that, eh?
FL ACLU has something to say about this:
https://www.aclufl.org/en/news/taxation-without-representation-wrong-240-years-ago-and-wrong-today
Yeah, except this here…..
“I’ve been making a decent salary, paying my taxes and not receiving a cent in government benefits, but I still can’t vote,” she says. “That to me is taxation without representation. More than that, everybody deserves a second chance – everybody.
…except for those convicted of homicide or sexual felonies.
Did someone change the definition of the word “everybody”?
So this case is still worthless to anyone convicted of ANY sexual offense. So much for those teenagers who sexted to ever be able to vote when they turn 18.
Like I’ve said before – when certain political parties don’t win an election, they have only themselves to blame for not allowing certain people to vote.
My conviction was 1999. I did my time. All of my requirement including all fees and costs are paid. I can’t hold professional licenses in Florida. I can’t vote. I get rejected regularly for jobs. RSO is a life sentence no matter what they say. I’m sorry but the fact as brought up in this article is of no interest to me. Tell me about something that effects or helps me and other RSO’s This stuff about the others does not effect me. What I do care about is getting the Federal Government to stop paying states to put us on registries and provide a fair way for us to work our way off.
