Florida Sex Offender Registry Breaks 80,000
It’s not the milestone any State should aspire to reach, but the State of Florida now, officially, has more than eighty thousand names on it. 80,342 as of today, to be exact.
Florida is adding so many people to it’s registry at such a fast pace that we just flew past the 80K mark without even noticing it! Of course, more than 18,000 of those are currently locked up and not in the community, 506 are in civil commitment an indefinitely locked up, 3252 were deported to another country, oh, and 1304 are dead. Besides that, more than 29,000 list a permanent address in another state or country. There are 19 kids on the registry, but get this… we have 14 who are still alive and over 100 years old! Better keep a close eye on those centenarians, right?
Only California and Texas have been known for having larger registries than Florida, but last year California enacted a tiered registry, which affords lower tier registrants to be removed. Texas also allows people on the registry to petition for “deregistration” under certain circumstances, so long as they have only one registrable offense and they have met or exceeded the duration of registration under the Adam Walsh Act. So, it should not be much longer until Florida overtakes those states.
Eighty thousand is a big number. To put that into perspective for the lawmakers up in Tallahassee (population 191,000), that’s nearly 50% of the population of your city! So good job lawmakers. Whether your next milestone is 100,000 people registered or simply to be in first place, you’re on track!
You know what, I can remember back when the entire United States had only 80,000 registered persons. One or two incidents that happened many decades ago caused almost 1 million people and their friends, families and bosses to endure hardships that have grown to unimaginable numbers.
Based on the Butts County case notes, citizens CAN place their own signs in their yards and on license plates. Perhaps this number can be proudly displayed as stickers on license plates, “Florida, home of 90k sex offenders!”
Roger
Can we fair though and make the sticker read
“Florida, home of 90k FORMER sex offenders!”
Not saying that no one re-offends, we all know that is not true. But the worry warts and rubble rowsers like to use scare tactics making it sound like there are sex offenders on every corner waiting to jump out and have their way with whoever passes by.
You are more likely to be killed by a train or a car in Florida.
I rather have my girlfriend paint my nails than have a sign in my yard or car. At least nail polish comes off where the registry never goes away and stinks.
Wait until the tourism industry puts that out there! Won’t look good…
My state has less than 5k on the registry and I’m one of the 29k on Florida’s wheel of misfortune. Will Florida ever get a clue and stop chasing the golden goose? Hopefully the goose gets cooked soon. Right now I’ll crack open the bottle letting it breathe.
Better especially keep an eye out for the dead ones! There ghosts are going to get you. And there residents are really hard to keep track of. Better hire more police officers to track them down.
Meanwhile, Florida’s Attorney General and Orange County Sheriff’s are touting a new program to help prevent “human trafficing.” Thry did this today in Orlando, home of Disney and other theme parks, rather than the state Capital.

Yeah I guarantee the rodent is involved in a lot of the financial backing for this. Gotta keep that squeaky clean image. I’ve said for years that Florida isn’t run out of Tallahassee, it’s run by Anaheim, California. You would think they’d be more progressive in that case…I have a cousin in San Fran who said if I had caught my charges out there, I’d have only had counseling and probation, and not gotten locked up.
