DOJ Now Investigating Florida Sheriff’s Office for Using a Federal Grant To Fund Its ‘Predictive Policing’ Harassment Programs

The Tampa Bay Times has been reporting on the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office for targeting and harassing individuals with a criminal background along with family members living with them.  A follow-up story from the Tampa Bay Times reported that the Pasco County Sheriff’s office was also monitoring public school students who had discipline problems in school.  What is coming next from the sheriff in Pasco County?

Fortunately, the U. S. Department of Justice is now conducting an intensive review of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.  DOJ is concerned about the methodology used to identify targets, communications with the community and the insufficient coordination with relevant law enforcement agencies.

Equally important is the $700,000 Bureau of Justice Assistance grant money given to the Sheriff’s Office while the terms of the grant appear to have been violated.

How about investigate how Florida bloats the registration with people who don’t live there anymore, people who just visit and decreased people to benefit from the Federal funds to help keep the registration going.

Scott E, that is a great reason for DOJ investigation. The folks who will block it are the politicians benefitting from the registry.

100% agree with you, Scott!! I moved out of Florida 20+ years ago – I want off its f*cking Registry already!! 😡
(Yes, I have definitely contributed to the ongoing FAC lawsuit[s] efforts to free people from Florida’s Forever Registry.)

We should ALL move out of the Florida on the same day and flood the registry offices with our info of moving. Then they would have and entire registry that exists only online. All the registry cops would have to go back to patrol and all that extra funding goes bye bye.

Hello everyone. I know this this has nothing to do with this topic but yesterday 09/25/2021 I had a phone call from a “detective” from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department and this guy claimed that I was sent a letter and had 48 hours to respond and since I hadn’t responded I needed to come up with $2.500 to be released. I was instructed to get in my vehicle and keep him on the phone as I drove to the police station. He then said he was going to transfer me to his “captain and then the captain instructed me to get a money card ( RED FLAG) and I told him that I didn’t have that kind of money, then he got impatient and said what about family or friends and I said nope I don’t have. I suggested that we meet at the Sheriffs office so we could take care of this matter and then the turd hung up on me. I went to the Sheriffs Department and called from the parking in case I did have a warrant, because if so i was going to walk across the street and go the bail bondsmen and figure something out, but I was told by a deputy that I was in compliance and there was warrant, talk about a weight off the old shoulders, but yesterday was a real eye opener. So if anyone out there ever gets a call and they are asking for a money card or if something sounds a little off, insist on meeting them at the Sheriffs Department and also call the Sheriffs Department and verify weather of not if you have a active warrant. Take care everyone and stay safe…William

I am glad you did not fall for this. So many out there do.

I have a question for you. Do you have a listed phone #? I am just curious how these dirt bags are getting our phone #’s. Mine is unlisted. This is more evidence the registry is punishment but no judge has the cojones to admit it.

As a matter of fact i do have a number and it’s the same area code as mine which is a 813 Tampa area code, but what’s strange is it’s my cell phone number and that’s what has me really confused

Most likely that phone number was compromised when used for a business transaction. Businesses have their systems hacked often.

Florida registrants may be particularly vulnerable. I’m guessing FL registry information is easily accessible online. It doesn’t take much for a criminal enterprise to cross link your registry file with a compromised business database that contains your phone number.

Perhaps the best way to protect against these is to get a junk phone number to use for non-essential business transactions and keep your real number reserved for family, the sheriff and anyone else who truly needs to get in touch with you.

William, you need to file a report about this to the Sheriff’s Office. They have a constitutional duty to investigate because it was someone impersonating one of them. See FSS 843.08. We all need to flood LE departments with formal reports about these scams.

Hi Bill thank you for responding, I did make a complaint online as instructed by the officer at the front desk at the county jail and I just seen an email and it basically said that it was a scam and since I didn’t lose any money I’m not a victim in any way. I always thought impersonating a law official was a crime, what happened to serve and protect

William B, you can file a supplemental report or notify their Internal Affiars Unit (might be called Professional Standards) to inform them about the impersonation of LE aspect of this crime. No, you are not a victim. You are however a witness to a felony that occurred in their jurisdiction. As a “good citizen” you can insist on that felony being investigated because all citizens are violated whenever someone pretends to be a LEO

The DOJ investigating a Sheriff’s office will result in a stern letter being sent. Also a massive $100 fine. Also the Sheriff will suffer a one hour suspension that will stay in his file for at least a week.

The worst punishment being banned for a month from Dunkin Donuts. This is a good start but cops investigating cops is like a baseball umpire calling his own son safe when he was clearly out.

Nah he’ll get a promotion and a massage at the nearest parlor for his violation of Florida citizens. Stuff like this makes me have no faith in law enforcement because they keep getting away with bullying and no accountability. We however are always held accountable no matter how long it’s been and that includes death. Florida can kiss my ashes because I’m getting cremated.
