Disturbing study on consequences of criminalizing prostitution

A recent study out of Sweden found unintended consequences in Sweden because of a ban on the purchase of sex.  Research indicates that laws trying to curb prostitution may have led to an increase in rape offenses.

Laws trying to reduce human trafficking by penalizing the buyers of sex rather than the sex workers themselves have possibly caused a rise in rape cases by approximately 44% to 62% following the implementation of the ban.

The primary reason prostitutes are the object of relentless physical abuse is because prostitution has been criminalized. The United States is one of the few countries in the Western Hemisphere to criminalize prostitution. It is the fact that sex work is illegal that emboldens men to attack the prostitutes they patronize since they know there is little chance the prostitute will contact the police, for fear of being arrested. Prostitution is legal in most of the Western World for this very reason.
