A balanced story about a registrant issue?
Dare I say the following story is pretty balanced?
Victoria neighborhood protests level 3 sex offender
“We need to give him the opportunity to succeed,” Bliven said. “We don’t have to give him too many breaks on things, but we also should not be trying to make him stumble. Harassing him and holding up signs; making his life miserable is not benefitting public safety. What benefits public safety is letting him work through all the issues he has.”
It’s funny how much individuals think that their opinion actually matters to someone who has heard all of that before. They approach you as if their opinion is more important than all the other exact same opinions that you’ve heard. The best way to make sure that that outside transition goes smoothly would be to go to the house where that person lives in an introduce yourself. Make sure that The person knows that you’re aware of the situation and that is long as you conduct yourself properly that no one will bother you and let it go. I’m not saying roll out the red carpet and bring in the welcome wagon, but there’s so little neighbor contact these days that no one gives anyone a chance anymore. Sometimes all anyone ever needs is just a chance. You don’t need to prove yourself, prove your guilt or innocence, but you do have to show that you’re making an effort and that if you did do something wrong people can change, but the people around you need to be able to change with you and or help you make those changes. Support, not resistance, is the key to success. It takes a village.
That is a good point, Ben. Shortly after I bought my house, a flyer appeared in neighborhood mailboxes, oddly including mine. My response was to create a counter flyer, distribute it through the neighborhood and talk with anyone who was available. The responses ranged from “they shouldn’t have done that” to benign détente. Since then, I’ve had no trouble and get waves from many.
By the way, I’ve already emailed the article’s author thanking him and encouraging him to write a follow-up article regarding recidivism and actual dangers. Notice that the subject of the article was not on the registry when he committed his crime.

Ed C, I did the same thing and had equally good results. I’ve lived in my home 17 years and have good repour with all of my neighbors.

Funny you mention getting a flyer in your own box. I get the “Sign up for “Nextdoor” Envelopes all the time. Why? They know I am banned by default. I even tried to sign up just to see and a big scary clown face popped up on the screen saying “No, no no”.
Ok no clown but it did block me so might as well have been a Bozo.
And why the Hell taunt me with a mailer if they Know, I am a no, go!
Since none of this was ruled as punishment, shouldn’t be a big deal though right? If a Representative or judge was being protested outside their homes, cops would be posted in front of their house.
The officials statements of “One DOC official believes the community group maintaining a constant vigil outside Vanhecke’s residence may be doing a disservice to him and the community.” is similar to the grandstanding Willy Wonka did when Agustis fell into the chocolate river. The Mom screamed “help him do something” and Wonka relied “Help!, Police! Murder!”.
Great analogy of Willie Wonka, Cherokeejack.

Thanks Bob, I am a movie buff. I probably watched Wonka at least 20 times. It is one of those movies you can watch 100 times and still say “I don’t remember that scene last time I watched.”
Ha ha ha ha. Not many people can pull a Wonka quote out and use it effectively. Top marks!!!!
Rick
Thanks, it is a Classic, that to me, is always worth watching. Although I cannot lately remember them airing it anymore. Every year they would air Wonka, Wizard of Oz, Doctor Doolittle and a few others.
Pretty balanced to me. This public notification thing isn’t really working too well for anyone, huh Minnesota? All it does is put people into an unnecessary panic, perpetuates failure for the registrant and creates a PR nightmare for the government.
I predict Minnesota will be the first state to end the public registry and I have a feeling Patty Wetterling has made known her disdain for it. She used her power to create it, she can do the same to end it.
It was awhile ago now that she said publicly, “we just want the abuse to end, to never do it again. Ruining people’s lives, shaming them, shaming children isn’t how we stop abuse.” Amen, lady. Amen.

Could we all give her a group hug? It is like people who are in court and their loved one has been killed. As soon as the person gets out on bail, one of the victim’s family members kills them.
On the other side of the coin, I have seen court cases where the victims family looks a murderer in their eyes and say those words you never expect to hear from a victim ” I Forgive You! ”
I had somewhere in between. No one even showed up for my court hearing execpt me, my lawyer, the judge and the prosecution.
Please post studies that can be presented to the city council so that a member of the FAC can present this data, July 19th. Administrators of the site can contact me directly through my posted email address. “The Victoria City Council has scheduled a public hearing on July 19 for discussion of its sex offender residency restrictions ordinance that was adopted in 2017.”
The videos on our youtube channel will give you all of the information you need. You can start out with the ones which are not oral arguments from a court case, though you will find tons of information in those as well where lawyers are citing research in an effort to convince judges.

Roger, there are gangs of resources listed in the FAC resources section. The same is true for NARSOL, Women Against the Registry, ACSOL and others. One of the most credible, dare I say unimpeachable, sources is the analysis presented in the American Law Institute’s (ALI) recent revision to the Model Penal Code. The ALI has tremendous gravitas, lawyers such as District Attorneys could not easily reduce its credibility.

I agree with this article. People need to take a step back and look at the whole picture. Instead of putting someone down offer a hand of kindness or kind words to encourage him/her to do good.
Too bad the article by Justin Lundy from WCYB inflamed viewers by writing a fearmongering (Shiitake-Worthy) hit piece.
Didn’t realize this was a different town (and state) when I made the girst comment. There’s just so many of these problems now that I can’t keep up with all of them.
I can’t help but wonder how many of these protestors will go home and behind closed doors commit a sex offense. It’s strange how those with the most ‘dirt’ in their backgrounds seem to be the first to protest in an effort to cover their background. It’s known as the ‘thermodynamic affect’…’pass the heat’.
“The Victoria City Council has scheduled a public hearing on July 19 for discussion of its sex offender residency restrictions ordinance that was adopted in 2017.
Bliven said many Minnesota communities have adopted such ordinances, but said the question is whether they are enforceable if challenged by an offender. He said one city paid out $80,000 to an offender in a lawsuit.“
Nice to know lawsuits debilitate these regimes.
Problems, Problems, Problems, damn the problems. Sure talk about a balancing act in this whole registry ACT…or who is carnal by nature or is Government playing the harlot? Come on guys myself and I’m sure many others did not get involved in all this as many can get whitewashed by all this cover up of justice. Sure I’ll speak out any time and I hope others do also. Even black lives matters as others are speaking out for their causes weather it be homelessness, banishment, job equality or equal rights, and yes let us not forget the me too movement had to get involved also or who was against Vietnam back in the day. Now it seems who is abusing who on a one, two, three, tier scale.
Yes I’m sure many of you all were a bit perturbed by all this also. So where do discerning spirits come into play. Guess no one ever thought about that or were we all were lead away by much of this registry school girl fracas. Myself, I actually talked to the person on the phone and that voice gave way to this whole ordeal. Second night after more harassment, I went down and proved in this discernment.
Why would an officer of the law commit such a abominable on another such as these registry issues thereby putting themselves in jeopardy To deceive man or to get some admiration from others, maybe some money from striving to prevent or pervert justice. Sure one can talk about a balancing ACT if one wants to play by one’s rules but were sin abounds grace abounds more and officers of law enforcement need to understand that they are the one’s doing the abominations and are just as guilty in many ways and schemes. Would much of this ordeal happen if their was no internet at all and these officers breaking their own morals or who is breaking covenant today. One could say what was the ulterior motive. Or who is confused today in this balance act.
I had 7 families on my street I was mowing lawns for, just so I could buy food. I just lost 6 of the 7 yards because of Nextdoor this week.
How is that not punishment. I lost jobs that I worked hard to earn, and by no fault of my own (Other than committing a crime 30 years ago) I have just one customer left.
But the public has the right to know that one time 30 years ago I had a illegal but consensual encounter with my 16 year old girlfriend. So I better not mow any lawns lest I break into their houses and oogle their offspring.
Forever marked -Never forgiven
