FAC Wishes for Independence Day and Updates on new Legislation
Dear Members and Advocates,
Happy Independence Day!
Beyond fireworks and BBQs, the 4th of July celebrates the anniversary of one of the most important documents in our history, the Declaration of Independence. Included in that document are the following important words:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. …That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it”
All men (or women) are created equal. That means all. Not ‘all except the people we deem are sex offenders… they are not entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’ It means all. One day the courts will find that these words in the Declaration of Independence and the preamble to the Constitution, that begins “We the people”, means all people.
Until that day, our movement will be like the civil rights movements of many a class of people who had to remind the government that that “all” and “we” applied to them too! Today, lets celebrate the strength our movement is garnering and the knowledge that by this time, next year, our Ex Post Facto challenge to the Florida Registry will be in full swing.
Please join us for our monthly member call tomorrow night, July 5, 2018 at 8:00PM, on which we will be talking about the changes that were recently implemented to the Florida sex offender registry, namely the reduction of days (from 5 to 3) before an address is considered a “residence” and registrable, and the new minimum mandatory sentence for registration violations. We will also be sharing some take-aways from the annual NARSOL conference in Ohio.
