Sheriff says transients jeopardize public safety

In the wake of Wednesday’s arrest of a transient Fort Collins man on suspicion of first-degree murder, Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith took to social media to criticize policies allowing Northern Colorado’s homeless population to grow, thus complicating public safety and law enforcement efforts.

Smith, a vocal Republican, published a lengthy Facebook post at 2 a.m. Friday that initially expressed sympathy for Hoffman’s friends and family, and went on to bash local policies conducive to transients’ lifestyles.
