Floridians charged over voting believed they were eligible, documents show

Several Floridians facing criminal voter fraud charges, loudly trumpeted by Governor Ron DeSantis last week, believed they were eligible to vote, and in some cases said they were advised by government officials that they could cast ballots.

Court and election documents reviewed by the Guardian raise questions about whether the 19 people charged last week knowingly committed fraud or whether they were confused about their eligibility. All those charged have prior murder or sexual offense convictions, which means they cannot vote in Florida unless they receive clemency. All of the defendants also submitted voter registration applications, which were approved by local election officials, ahead of the 2020 election, and several said they had received voter registration cards in the mail, which they took as a signal that they were eligible to vote.

If I was the judge, I would ask them all to return their voter cards, promise to not vote again (Unless otherwise approved) and drop all the voter fraud charges. Sounds like the state failed by approving them and giving false hope leading to unlaw arrests.

True. And every single one of them needs to plead not guilty.

Smoke and mirrors folks. The Governor is well aware of the heated and emotional environment surrounding so called “voter fraud” during the 2020 election and he capitalized on that. It’s that simple. They don’t care about facts. It’s optics. It’s not much different than the tactics Sherriffs use after conducting “stings”. They know that the news cycles are so fast that no one will remember that in the end this was all a sham. All they will remember when they cast thier ballot is that Governor DeSantis saved us all from these predatory election fraudsters. I feel like I’m living in a cartoon.

Just another example of how screwed up our government is. Even some of the bureaucrats are confused. This is what happens when everybody is in charge while nobody is in charge. Since when did the debt to society include requiring citizens to pay taxes while denying those same citizens the right to vote…have representation? Once again, our Founding Fathers must be rolling over in their graves in disgust. As my neighbor’s wife told me…my neighbor is a retired NYPD lieutenant…I would be better off if I had murdered someone or committed armed robbery. At least they are not on a registry. By the way…they are great neighbors!
