Channel 7 brought out the direction of change if allowed. But having 2 channels reporting is far better than what we have had. I believe its a great step. The only hurdle is the AG that opposed the MPC changes is now put in the lime light. Bring all those opposer’s out into the light of television

As the videos pointed out, the “new” law is almost exactly like the old one, with almost no regard by the state for the actual rulings in the federal cases about the unconstitutional aspects of the old law. It’s very sad being on the winning side of a class action lawsuit, and yet get nothing out of it.
I’m just a little curious as to why ACLU is not trying to work on or Focus on Florida’s SO registry? I mean our population is ranked 3rd in the nation. I don’t know all the statistics but I am almost certain there is far more people on the registry here in Florida than any of the other 49 states and the US territories. Not to mention that Florida’s registry requirements seems to be far worse than any other states.

Oh I was not aware of that. I was under the impression that FAC had their own attorney etc. and that ACLU was not involved at all in Florida. I think the approach they (ACLU) is taking in Michigan is an approach we (FAC & ACLU) can take in approaching the registry if we are not already doing so. Get some type of publicity through the news like she did in this interview. Informing the general public of the the tax payer cost that is accomplishing nothing, the diluted registry of so many various non violent/ one time mistake etc so crimes that henders the actual purpose of the registry etc. It’s the big elephants in the room that what seems that the media doesn’t want to cover. From the 2nd video I even got the impression from the news reporter that she had the reaction of “like why are we even reporting on this” type of mentality. It was subtle but I noticed it. Maybe it was just me.
When similarly situated citizens are treated differently under the laws, it creates constitutional questions on privileges and immunities, as well as equal protection issues. I don’t see where this is addressed anywhere in the MI suit.
Tim the ACLU has already had involvement with the issues going on in Miami, and as usual it has fallen on deaf ears in Florida.
Anywhere I can read about those?
I’d like Michigan’s AG to bd interviewed and asked why she was one of the 37 AGs who opposed the ALI’s proposal. Put her and all of Michigan’s leadership feet to the fire. Why keep passing a law that’s similar to the one being challenged?
Did you notice that the reporter called them ‘registrants’ and not ‘sex offenders’?
That, to me, is a big deal. The media almost always reports registrants as ‘sex offenders,’ even when they’re reporting on someone who’s no risk to re-offend.

There was mention that “the punishment should fit the crime,” and that offenders should be “held accountable.” This was followed by video clips of prisons, which equates the registry with punishment. Registrants have already been held accountable and been punished for their crimes. That is the judicial part.
This was a good report. But at no time did the reporter, or the ACLU lawyer, point out that the registry is not considered punishment. A criminal law must specify the punishment for a violation. I’m not aware of any statute that specifies registration as punishment. I wish that it would be added to one. It would make punishment unambiguous and the ex post facto argument much easier.
