Nurses hospitalized after opening mystery mail at DeSoto County sex offender treatment center
Two nurses went to the hospital on Monday after opening a letter at the Florida Civil Commitment Center, DeSoto County officials said.
A Charlotte County hazmat team tested the letter and did not find anything suspicious, according to officials. Both nurses were released from the hospital later in the afternoon.
The Florida Civil Commitment Center is a privately-run facility that treats sex offenders, in addition to providing mental health and substance abuse treatment. It is located just off SR-70 near the DeSoto Correctional Institution.
Paper cuts?
This is the first article I have seen in FAC about the Florida Civil Commitment Center (FCC) in Arcadia, Florida. This is a nothing story wasting your space. Since it’s opening in the 90’s, FCCC has been the most violent involuntary civil commitment center (there are 20 throughout America), with riots, insurrections, and lots of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. Documented include overwhelming incidents of sex between residents and staff and staff smuggling in drugs, tobacco, phones, child porn-all documented. Bruce Plesser, Esquire and myself have been trying mightily to effect change there, through use of the media, administrative grievances, public records lawsuits and litigation in the public interest for residents there. We have not seen any of it here. In July of 2020 we wrote to you and sought your help in getting the word out, so to speak. I wrote: “Also, sex offender treatment has been stopped at FCCC since the beginning of the pandemic. This is an absolutely exaggerated response to the Covid-19 virus and we will file a Complaint regarding that issue today or tomorrow at the latest. It is quite possible that people reading your publication will have information that will assist in our efforts to compel the government and their contractor at FCCC to treat the residents within the law.” A man named “Ron” replied “I will post.” We never saw any post about it. Your publication is essential in the fight against the Sex registration laws, but it ignores it’s fundamental target for relief from these laws; the hundreds of mine wasting and dying at FCCC, while DCF contracts with Wellpath Recovery Solutions, Inc. (They are The Geo Group, a sub corp). and taxpayers pay them dozens of millions of dollars to keep these men there til they die. Clinical staff with no licenses, arrest records, criminal records, all documented. I intend to join your group and become involved. We respect what you do. We want you to do more for these men.

I agree, I have given FAC numerous good stories related to the registry in the past that were ignored or later credited under the name of the “Paid member” . I was not even going to post on this story until I read what you wrote.
I was shocked to see this posted, but on the other hand……….I will leave it at that. “Mic drop”
Damian – I understand and respect. we have limited resources and have to direct them towards where most of the demand is.
CherokeeJack: I read your reply and I understand it and know how you feel.I did not read a reply from FAC until just now b/c I hadn’t seen. They offer respect and explain that they have limited resources. I understand that, too, because it is true and all news sources must make editorial decisions and take actions that some readers may disagree with, but that is how it works. As you can see from my post; I am not an appeaser. I do, however, understand the art of compromise; after all, that is what much of the law is about. This is the finest publication of its kind in Florida, and perhaps the entire country. They do work for sex offenders that they cannot do themselves. The give us news that we might not have gotten otherwise. Litigation if in play and they are deeply involved. I am going to perceive them printing my letter as a sign of change. That is a good thing. The thing with the Florida Civil Commitment Center is that the men there are among the most reviled population in any prison anywhere. People recoil at the idea of helping them, but they do like reading about them.Look, Cherokee, had we both just stewed in our feelings, and did nothing, we would, what good would that do? Now, things have changed. Nothing is constant but constant change. Please don’t give up. That wouldn’t help anyone. Peace. Damian Panno
