Florida Registrant Jailed for Failure to Report Address Change DIED of Coronavirus
A Broward jail inmate who was being treated for coronavirus has died, underscoring concern over how the pandemic will pose problems for detention facilities across South Florida.
One of the inmates, Alan Pollock, a 64-year-old convicted sex offender, died at Northwest Medical Center in Margate on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Broward Public Defender’s Office, which represented him.
Pollock, who most recently was held at the North Broward jail in Pompano Beach, was jailed last month, accused of violating probation because he changed his address without permission, records show. The Public Defender’s Office had tried to get Pollock out of jail.
UPDATE: He was on probation for a failure to register. His underlying case was from 1998!!!!!
Another way of reporting this is Mr. Pollack died from an unconstitutional life sentence per the requirements of being forced to register as a sex offender.
I Agree wholeheartedly considering that registration requirements in 1998 were no where near as punitive as today.
In 1998 at the time of plea I was required to report any change of address within 24 hours at any DMV and answer a mailed verification of address sent by FDLE. Must importantly I was eligible to petition for removal from the “list” after 10 years being released if no new felonies or misdemeanors.
All that change in 2005 when the State violated its plea deal.
No doubt about it Mr Pollock lost his life must likely because of the unlawful change of his original registration requirements as agreed at sentencing…Like me
I did the crime, I served the time honorably, not violating any of the terms of supervision. Once released I continued to comply with the ever increasing conditions imposed upon my liberty. Regardless how unfair and unjust they a
On the other hand the State has been nothing but dishonorable to its contractual agreements , having imposed increasingly and nearly impossible Ex Post Facto laws.
RIP my unknown friend. For now your free in the hands of your lord
Curious if he was on probation. If not, who is he supposed to get permission from? Or if his residence change from wherever to homeless? Or if he tried to report an address change but couldnt because of registry office closures?
A lot of significant questions not being asked by the reporter here.
Dustin,
The report says he was accused of violating probation for changing his address without permission. So, it appears he was on probation.
So let me get this straight – it is claimed that registration is NOT punishment and yet it can result in death.
From being stalked, harassed and even killed by a vigilante to dieing in a pandemic by either being forced where the exposure is great (locked up for a technical violation) or denied access to shelter and/or medical treatment.
Sure sounds like something no one would want – sounds a lot worse than punishment actually!
As a registered ISO who was extradited from NYC 8/2 years ago, where by the way, my crime( chatting and camming online with a supposed minor who was a Orange county Florida police decoy ) according to the NYC police would have been a misdemeanor with a year probation no sex charges, I have often wondered why a murderer has much less sentencing and is treated better than most sex offenders.
What a shame this man had to suffer this way and die this way.
If he contracted covid-19 while in custody I hope his family can hire a good lawyer and sue for wrongful death
It is a travesty that this man had to suffer and die that way!
The state of Florida has blood on their hands and all of those in law enforcement are guilty as well…“just following orders” is not an excuse nor is “it’s the law” as those can be changed with the stroke of a pen and are therefore nothing – just ask all those Trump has forgiven!
Your one life on this planet has been altered forever by Florida and the barbaric and proven useless sex offender registry!
Time for change that is long overdue!
I feel this is something relevant to our argument of why only people with sexual offenses are considered a “threat to public safety.” I want to share it here in case many of you have not heard of this stuff happening. This is actually the 2nd story I’ve read about people being idiots and thinking they’re gonna get away with literally risking the safety of the public. Would our politicians make a registry for these people? Nah… because it’s not sex related. Pathetic!

The nazis tried the ” just following orders ” line at Nuremberg, it didnt fly then so what makes these idiots think it should now ? Or should we have let monsters like Martin Bormman ,herman goring and Rudolf Hess go ? Saying they were good people, just because they said they were ” just following orders ” if a commander issues an unlawful order there are 3 things that you can do disobey it, and have to answer why later or immediately bring it to the attention of someone who is either above the one who issued the order or who is outside of the chain of command who can focus the right attention on the unlawfullness of the order.last you can obey the order and hope you dont end up on trial and hanged at Nuremberg. Because this hole sh@ t show of there’s is exactly like that , its crimes against humanity .
I am very sad for Mr. Pollock and his family. This is a reminder to all of us to stay vigilant and follow all the requirements they put on us, at least until the Courts step in and give all registered citizens the freedom we deserve from restrictions and the threat of incarceration.
With the passage of HB 333, more registrants will die in custody for petty violations since there is now no chance of bail for anyone EVER convicted of a “sex offense” if the victim was a minor and the accused an adult. This of course includes all entrapments with adults posing as minors and CP cases. Floriduh continues to be an outlier in continual harsher treatment of registrants.
It doesn’t prevent bail, except on appeal of a sex conviction against a minor.
I stand corrected
Guy in my neighborhood 9 arrests!! Just stabbed his fiancé in broad daylight on the street. Why wasn’t he ever jailed for a registration violation? Because his 9 prior crimes never involved a type of sex??
Sounds like you live in Duuuuuuvaaaal!
The US will have many constitutional suits because of this Covid-19 virus.
The federal government severely failed to act in time.
States limiting travel into other states and into/out of the US.
States putting registrants in danger to register and to succumb to visits.
1st amendments rights to religion, guns, etc
many others too.
