MO: Marion County Sheriff Warns of Scam Targeting Sex Offenders
I know we’ve warned, and warned, and warned, and warned, but I worry that if we don’t keep putting this out there someone will miss it and there goes thousands of dollars…
The latest telephone scam making the rounds in Missouri is targeting registered sex offenders.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Missouri Sex Offender Registry has received information from offenders and neighboring county registries about the scam.
The registered sex offender is contacted by someone claiming to be a sex offender compliance officer. In a specific case, the caller identified themselves as Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Shinn.
The caller informs the offender that they are non-compliant because they failed to submit a second sample of DNA and will be arrested on a warrant.
The caller then says the warrant will be recalled if they pay a fee using pre-paid gift cards.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reminds you they do not conduct warrant arrests by phone. If you have any questions, contact your local law enforcement agency.

I had the same thing happen to me and my 90 yr old mom. A man identified himself as a Sherrif. Said i had a warrant for my arrest for not showing up for court because i supposidly signed an electronic device saying i would give another DNA sample to the Sherrifs office. The caller wanted me to pay $1000.00 to an account that he gave me. If i didnt i would be arrested soon. Me and my mom kept asking him questions until we were convinced he was lying. But we already knew it from the start anyway.. The guy got all figity and nervous after we theatened him that he was goin to jail lol. We do have his phone number…
File a police report – it’s not until enough people insist a report be filed that they might actually do something.
What a joke – like he really cares about sex offenders! Don’t buy it for a second!
If they didn’t support this illegal and unconstitutional HIT LIST then the scammers would not have a list of citizens to target for this scam!

The cops don’t like the competition! All these DNA scams? It looks bad for the local pigs. They are jealous. Only they want to be the ones that can harass and extort money from us!
The guys that run this scam are very good. They tell you to stay on the phone so they can track you(hoping you wont call the local police or your lawyer or the RSO they say is in trouble) the have background noises that sound just like a police department because of the registry they have all your pertinent info right down to your car and license plate Number/DOB/Address etc… They prey on you and your loved ones saying you didn’t show for a court appearance or something like this. if you cant hang up the phone to verify it with your spouse or the RSO they are targeting because they said they are trcking you, you end up giving them money because you think your doing the right thing. The real police/sheriff will come and get you they will never call and say they are coming. tell all of your relatives that they may get a call saying they need to give money because your in trouble and to hang up when anyone like this calls them and call you directly if they dont reach you have them call the local police to verify the story. They almost got me and i think i am a pretty sharp guy
Like to make a correction here . They claim there is already a warrant out for your arrest and that your picture has been circulated around and that people that follow these make money by locating you and collecting the $500.00 price on your head. Your bond has been set at $40,000 you will need 10% to post bond to avoid immediate arrest and imprisonment . A new law just passed allows you to pay with pre payed cards. They no longer take checks or cash. You must purchase them and bring them to the police station immediately to avoid arrest.
The fact that SOR laws change on a regular basis make it all believable. You never know what restrictions they’ve added or changed.
Once again, if anyone is gullible enough to fall for it, I don’t know what to say. Anyone on the registry knows the rules and how the State conducts their business. I shake my head that they can be duped at this point!
Just to be clear, this is NOT Marion county Florida but Marion county Missouri, if I am reading the article correctly. There is a Marion county in both states.
Still, thanks for the reminder, as even the smartest person can be conned when under duress.
Correct – the Title begins with the State.
Until sheriffs start arresting these people, nothing will be done about the problem.
