Communicating Your Story – Part 1: Your Story in Print

This year will be focused on helping members to tell their story in various formats including  a 30-sec elevator pitch, 3-minute videos, magazine articles, editorials, letters, and even novels.  On the Monthly Membership call tonight Feb 6, 2020 at 8pm ET, we will be hearing from three guests:  a magazine editor, a book author, and a book printer.  Each guest has a direct interest in FAC and our members.

A frequent statement I hear from members is “I’m going to write a book.”  That is a daunting task.  There are several other ways to get your story in print.  Have you considered starting with a magazine article?

Our first guest tonight is Will Mingus, the editor-in-chief and creator of Life Times Magazine.  Learn more about it in this 2019 NARSOL article. Now in its third year of publication, this quarterly magazine offers registry-related editorials, suggestions, reviews, and legal summaries of pertinent cases. It also contains suggestions for resources, family support, and an array of personal interest sections from recipes to religion.  Moreover, each edition contains at least one story of a registered person who has found success in their business, employment, or personal life. Our guest will discuss why he started this magazine, the type of articles he looks for, and how you can submit a completed piece for consideration to Life Times, or other magazines in general.

If you are still focused on writing a book, the second guest is Dr. Christopher Pelloski, MD.  We have featured Dr. Pelloski in a previous post (here) and we welcome him to our Membership call this evening to give insight into the process of writing a book, or in his case two books: Book 1: Trauma, Shame, and the Power of Love: The Fall and Rise of a Physician Who Heals Himself      and Book 2: A Tortuous Path: Atonement and Reinvention in a Broken System

You can also learn more about Dr. Pelloski  in an interview (here) with the defense attorney who represented him, Stephen Palmer (NOTE: “Lawyer Talk: Off the Record”, Channel 511 covers controversial topics and human interests in a balanced and unbiased manner).

Whether you are writing to publish an article, a book, or a personal family history, you need to be aware of our third guest, Jen Brooks. She is the Vice President of Royal Palm Press, an on-demand book manufacturing and printing company.  If you want to know anything about self-publishing, Jen is the contact for you.  She will discuss the process, costs, and what you should know about printing books.

To participate in tonight’t call Feb 6 at 8pm ET, dial 319-527-3487. Please announce your first name and county.

Watch for the March Membership Call  “Communicating Your Story – Part 2: Your Story in Person” when our guest will be a professor of Storytelling Studies.
